Reclaimation Survival Guide
Welcome Home!!!
Reclaimation is situated deep in a holler in the Appalachian Mountains of Eastern Kentucky. The property is bounded by the Daniel Boone National Forest on three sides and Buckhorn Lake on the other. This land had lain dormant and overgrown until the present landowner, Linda, took ownership in the early 1990's. Since then, she has worked to clean up the land and to live upon it as gently as she can. She asks that you respect her property and that you be kind to the wildlife and plant life that you find living here. Beyond Yonder is very remote, and the ride in is spectacular.
Because the trip in is so spectacular, please be sure to drive very slowly and watch the road carefully once you turn onto Hell For Certain Road. From here on out, you will be traveling on mostly one lane roads with lots of 4-wheeler traffic. Those folks on the 4-wheelers live here, and they will be rightly inquisitive of your presence. Please remember to act "normal" until you reach of the gates of Beyond Yonder. Just remember to drive slowly. It will take you approximately an hour to drive the last 5 miles to the gates of Reclaimation. Yeah...I know...sounds a little scary, but it's not. Just relax and enjoy the scenery. The road will be marked with signage stating: "Burns Family Reunion" and flame design duct tape attached to various tree limbs to point you in the right direction. GPS will only get you to the open park-like area; from there on, you need to use the directions sent to you via email.
When you arrive at the gate, please have your ID ready. There will be a map to point you in the direction you want to camp...and if you don't know where you want to camp, there will be willing, sexy volunteers to show you around. There will also be volunteer sign-up sheets at the gate. Remember to volunteer!!!!
Now for the fun part! Beyond Yonder is an undeveloped piece of property. What was once developed, has been taken back by the land. This is primitive camping at it's best. So, you will be dealing with uneven ground, rocks, cliffs, weasels, snakes, and zombies. No, seriously, no weasels have been sighted, but just in case. You MUST remember to keep your flashlight with you at all times! If you fall over a cliff, it is going to be a great big bummer for the rest of your burn. Light is good. There are ravines and drop-offs...please be careful!
Another thing which is good: shoes. Nice walking/hiking shoes. We are in the mountains. Use your common sense, please. Another important thing to remember is bug spray. We have these delightful little bugs called midges or "no see-ums". Tiny little blood-thirsty buggers that come out at daybreak and dusk. You've been warned. Speaking of things to bring, here is a basic list of items that you are more than likely going to need:
Shelter Bedding
Clothing (warm/cool) First Aid Kit
Rain Gear Matches/Lighter
Bug Spray Sun Screen
Food Water (2 ga/person/day)
Flashlight Utensils
Cookware Garbage Bags
There are lots of spots to camp in the woods for small tents, and we have some wooded sites for larger camps. Rebar and lots of rope would be a good thing if you're planning on having tarps. Rocky ground and not alot of trees do not make for good tie-down opportunities. Be prepared. Extra blankets and pillows if you have room are also a good idea. They come in handy for propping up air mattresses and sleeping bags on an incline.
Composting toilets are utilized at Reclaimation. In fact, both of the movable toilets on site were made during our first work/play weekend in Cynthiana, Ky., and then transported to Beyond Yonder. Composting toilets are not difficult, but there a few rules.
Rule #1: If it does not come out of your body, please do not put it in the potty. (Toilet paper is the only exception)
Rule #2: If you can pee standing up, please find a tree and do so.
Rule #3: One poop, One scoop.
That's it! That's all there is to it. Oh, except for one last thing. If you arrive at the potty and the bucket is full, either holler at someone, or take the initiative and change the bucket. As long as everyone follows the 3 SIMPLE rules above, there will be no sloshing or yuck associated with changing the buckets. This PSA is now finished. If you have extra buckets w/lids, we sure could use some more!!!
Cabins on the property belong to the landowner, so please respect her privacy.
If you are camping in or near the woods, you cannot have a fire unless it is in an approved container (that means approved by Kim, Eric, or Joan). Any unattended fires will be gleefully extinguished. Firepits will be situated at different spots with the biggest one being on the Burn Field close to where the effigy will be built.
The Labyrinth and Medicine Wheel are located on Sacred Ground and is a dedicated quiet area. Please be respectful of others while in this area.
Here is a very informative site on labyrinths: www.lessons4living.com/labyrinth.htm.
EMS and Rangers will be located in front of the central Cabin near the Burn Field. If you need assistance and no one is there, use the walkie-talkie on the table.
This is a LNT event! If you pack it in, you MUST pack it out!!! Yes, that includes YOU!!! Do some planning while you pack and get rid of all that extraneous packaging materials. If you leave so much as a piece of glitter on the glorious ground that is Beyond Yonder, the Earth Guardian will swoop down upon you with her Lard Paddle held high and you will feel her wrath! Once again, you've been warned.
If it rains, as tends to happen in May, expect mud.
Poisonous snakes and yellow jackets have been seen on the land. If you require an EpiPen, please be sure to carry one with you at all times. If you encounter a snake, please do not kill it. Linda, the landowner, will relocate the snake to another habitat. Just start hollering "snake" and folks will come running.
Anyone wanting to Volunteer should sign up at the gate. We will get you in touch with the proper folks on the land. This is your city! Please help us make it safe and fun for everyone by doing your part to volunteer!
Anyone wanting to be a part of the fire conclave burn night should meet at the EMS/Ranger station on Saturday for the safety meeting. Look for the time at the gate when checking in.
We are doing a Non-Perishable food drive this year for for Big Creek Mission. Leslie County residents are blessed to have Big Creek Mission volunteers who help in many different ways, from repairing leaky roofs to feeding the less fortunate. Reclaimation is proud to be of help to such a wonderful organization. We realize that times are tough, but please remember the less fortunate and bring a non-perishable food item or two for the drive and help us help our local community!
This is an 18 and over event with ID please.
No Gate Sales so buy them Here!
